Every VPN / Proxy solution will have an impact on your connection speed, but you should generally still be able to browse and stream without a problem. However, please keep in mind that there are several factors which will determine the connection speed you get when using a VPN.
How does it work?
The largest factors are the speed of your normal internet connection at the time you're connected (could be everything from how many people are using the Internet in your area at the same time, to the infrastructure of your ISP) and your physical distance from the 'virtual location' you have chosen.
A high volume of traffic on VPN servers can also affect your speed. However, with a paid ZenMate subscription, you get access to our exclusive network of high-speed servers which prevents issues caused by this. This is what we refer to as ‘Turbo Speed’.
Besides encrypting your data and protecting your privacy, ZenMate wants to achieve the best experience for our users. That's why we’re constantly working hard on keeping our server infrastructure stable and we're always looking for new ways to improve it.

If you're experiencing any speed issues when using ZenMate Premium or Ultimate there are some things you can try:
- Check your account status.
Make sure that you're logged in properly with your Premium or Ultimate account and also make sure that your subscription status is still valid.
- Avoid double tunneling (for desktop).
Make sure you are not using the ZenMate VPN browser extension and the ZenMate VPN desktop client at the same time, as it will reroute your connection twice, which will slow down your browsing speed.
- Choose a location close to you or the website you're visiting.
The physical distance between your real location, the ZenMate server, and the server of the website you are visiting plays a huge role in the speed you will experience. For best possible speed, choose a ZenMate location close to your real location.
- Update your browser and ZenMate VPN.
Make sure that you are using both the latest browser version and ZenMate VPN version available, as earlier versions can cause issues.
- Clear browser/app data.
Clear all browsing data including your browsing history, download history, cookies, and cache (see browser/phone settings).
- Contact ZenMate Support.
It's very hard to diagnose a speed issue, as speed is a fairly relative term and what is considered slow for someone might be normal for someone else. Therefore, please describe your experience as detailed possible.
Please also include the following information:
- Your ZenMate IP, at the time of the speed issues;
- The time and date of the issue;
- Your actual physical location;
- What kind of internet connection you are using;
- Links to the site you experienced difficulties with;
